関連記事Meimon Taiyo Ferry “Ferry Kyoto” Boarding Report
- Time: 19:50 → 08:30 (approx. 12 hrs 40 mins)
- Route: Osaka (Osaka Nanko) → Fukuoka (Shinmoji Port)
- Seat: Comfort
- Fare: ¥6,800
6:30 PM, Ferry Terminal Station, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture.
Tonight’s journey is aboard the Meimon Taiyo Ferry “Ferry Kyoto.”
The destination is Shinmoji Port—about 12.5 hours away. The ferry terminal is directly connected to the station via a long passageway.
It’s about a 3-minute walk.
Once you exit the ticket gates, the passage stretches straight ahead to the left.At the end of the passage, you’ll find the waiting area on the second floor,
while the check-in counter is located on the first floor. After completing check-in, I headed to the waiting area on the second floor.
Many passengers had already gathered, and most of the seats were taken.Soon, a boarding announcement played, and the once-buzzing waiting room suddenly sprang to life.
One after another, passengers stood up and moved toward the boarding gate.
I joined the flow.
At the gate, the staff scanned the QR code on my ticket—and I finally stepped aboard. My cabin was the second-cheapest option: a shared “Comfort” room.
This room type was first introduced on Meimon Taiyo Ferry. It was born out of necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.
Though not part of the original design, it was quickly added in response to increased demand for private spaces. The room holds 14 partitioned beds in a large open area.
The layout is tall and narrow, allowing you to stand and change clothes inside your bed space.
In contrast, the cheapest “Tourist” class uses bunk beds—so you can’t stand up.In that sense, Comfort is far more, well, comfortable.
After dropping off my luggage, I headed to the observation restaurant.
7:10 PM—I arrived at the observation restaurant.
It’s a buffet-style setup: once you pay, you can eat as much as you like.Fried food, yakisoba, yaki-udon, baked curry…
A parade of carbs.
I grabbed a plate and found a seat.I chose a window-side table and enjoyed my meal while gazing at the harbor view.
Time check: 7:45 PM.
Departure time was approaching. After finishing dinner, I made my way to the observation deck.
7:50 PM—right on schedule, the ferry departed Osaka Nanko.
Looking back at the pier, I saw workers retreating into the terminal building. One of them stopped, turned toward us, removed his cap, and bowed.
Such a courteous gesture—about all I could do was wave back. The ship slowly pulled away from Osaka Nanko.
At 8:00 PM, I headed to the large bath on the 7th floor.
This ship has a spacious bath area that even includes an open-air tub.I wanted to try the open-air bath, but it was too crowded.
So instead, I settled for a soak in the indoor bath.Afterwards, I dried my hair with a dryer and made my way to the promenade.
I arrived at the 6th floor promenade—a space lined with long tables and chairs.
It was livelier than I expected, with quite a few people around.I found an empty seat at the far end and sat down.
Some were slurping cup noodles for a light meal.
Others were sipping beer, enjoying a casual drink. Each passenger had their own way of spending the night at sea.
At 9:51 PM, it was just about time to pass under the first bridge.
I decided to head to the observation deck again.9:00 PM — the ship passed under the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
Many passengers had gathered on the observation deck.Looking up, the bridge seemed to graze the top of the ship’s funnel.
In reality, there’s reportedly a clearance of about two meters. After enjoying the view of the bridge, I returned to my room and went to bed early.
12:17 AM — we passed under the Seto Ohashi Bridge.
The orange streetlights along the highway above created a beautiful scene.
Still, the wind was strong.
It had been gusty at the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, but it felt even windier now.
Cold winds had been blowing throughout this voyage. The next bridge crossing was scheduled for around 2:50 AM.
Since there was still time, I headed back inside to warm up in the shower room.
I arrived at one of the private shower rooms on the 7th floor.
The water-saving faucet stopped automatically after a few seconds. After my shower, I dried my hair and stepped out of the room.
I bought a Mitsuya Cider (¥180) from a nearby vending machine,
grabbed my laptop from my room, and headed to the now-closed restaurant. After hours, part of the restaurant was open as a free space.
There was still about an hour until the next bridge crossing.
So I decided to get in a little computer work.
The quiet, empty space was perfect for focusing.I got absorbed in my work, and before I knew it—it was 2:34 AM.
Time to head back out.
I checked the ship’s location monitor and went to the observation deck.2:37 AM — we passed under the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge.
Although it wasn’t illuminated, the bridge’s roadway lights stood out beautifully in the darkness.
A row of orange lights formed a glowing line, and a crescent moon hung in the sky to the left—
a surprisingly picturesque scene. The wind had finally begun to calm down.
There were still about four hours until breakfast.
I returned to my room and quietly went back to sleep.6:36 AM — the restaurant opened four minutes early.
There were fewer greasy items compared to dinner, but still plenty of variety.Simmered hijiki, kinpira (sautéed burdock), white fish, boiled sausages, tamagoyaki (rolled omelet).
Miso soup, curry, butter rolls, and sliced bread were also available.I took a tray of food and enjoyed breakfast by the window.
Afterward, I returned to my room, brushed my teeth, and headed back to the observation deck.
As I opened the door to the observation deck, a sea of light spread out before me.
It was so bright I had to squint. The morning sun rose over the horizon, painting the ocean gold.
The ship’s wake stretched all the way to the horizon like a glowing path. After taking in the view, I headed back to my room.
15 minutes before arrival, an announcement played:
“We will soon be arriving at Shinmoji Port in Kitakyushu.”
“Please double-check your belongings and prepare to disembark.”As the announcement ended, passengers began gathering in the entrance area.
I returned to my room and began packing my things.
8:30 AM — disembarkation began.
Upbeat music played throughout the ship.Passengers moved smoothly toward the exit.
I followed the flow and disembarked. In front of the terminal, free shuttle buses to JR Mojiko and JR Kokura Stations were waiting.
There were more passengers than I expected, and all seats toward the back were filled.8:43 AM — once everyone was onboard, the bus departed for Kokura and Mojiko.
9:26 AM — I arrived in front of JR Kokura Station.
The ride from Shinmoji Port took about 40 minutes.
Being able to travel that far for free is a huge plus. From Kokura, it’s just 16 minutes to Hakata by Shinkansen,
or about 1 hour and 27 minutes by local express—
either way, it’s affordable and convenient.Until now, traveling from Osaka to Fukuoka mainly meant bullet trains or planes.
But this ferry journey has shown me that sea travel is another charming option.Ferry Kyoto Ship Information

18:30, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, “Ferry Terminal Station.”
The ship I am boarding today is the Meimon Taiyo Ferry “Ferry Kyoto.”
Tonight, I will experience a 12-hour 30-minute ferry journey from Osaka Nanko to Shinmoji Port.
The ferry terminal station is directly connected to the boarding area via a long corridor, about a 3-minute walk.
Upon exiting the ticket gates, the corridor continued straight to the left.
At the end of the corridor, there is a boarding waiting area on the second floor, while the ticket check-in counter is on the first floor. After completing the check-in, I headed to the waiting area on the second floor.
Many passengers had already gathered, and most of the seats inside the terminal were occupied.
Soon, an announcement for boarding started, and the once-bustling waiting area suddenly came to life.
Passengers stood up one after another, heading to the boarding gate, and I followed their lead.
At the boarding gate, my ticket was scanned, and it was finally time to board the ship. The cabin was a “Comfort” shared room, the second least expensive option.
This was the first cabin type introduced by Meimon Taiyo Ferry.
This room was created in response to the increased demand for private rooms due to the pandemic’s impact in 2021.
It was not part of the original design, but due to the growing preference for private rooms, it was quickly added.
The room had 14 beds divided by partitions in a large room.
The design was long and narrow, allowing passengers to stand up and change clothes on the bed.
The cheapest “Tourist” room has bunk beds, making it impossible to stand up while in bed.
This room, however, was much more comfortable.
After placing my luggage in the room, I headed to the observation restaurant.19:10, I arrived at the observation restaurant.
The restaurant operated buffet-style.
After paying the fee, you could eat as much as you wanted.
There were deep-fried foods, yakisoba, yaki-udon, and baked curry.
It was a carb-loaded feast.
I took my food and sat down at a window seat, enjoying the view before departure while having dinner.
At 19:45, it was almost time to depart, so I finished my meal and headed to the observation deck.19:50, we departed Osaka Nanko on time.
I glanced at the dock and saw workers returning to the building.
One of them stopped, turned around, and tipped their hat as a gesture of respect.
In front of this polite worker, the only thing I could do was wave back.
The ship quietly left Osaka Nanko port.At 20:00, I headed to the onsen on the 7th floor.
This ferry has an onsen with an outdoor bath.
I decided to enter since I had the chance, but the outdoor bath was crowded.
I had no choice but to relax in the onsen area alone.
Afterward, I dried my hair with a dryer and headed to the promenade.I arrived at the promenade on the 6th floor.
The promenade was a long space lined with tables and chairs.
It was more crowded than I expected, and the atmosphere was lively.
There was a vacant seat at the end, so I sat down there.
On the promenade, people were enjoying their night in various ways, some having light meals like cup noodles and others drinking beer while enjoying the night.
At 21:51, we were approaching the first bridge, so I decided to head to the observation deck.21:00, we passed the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
Many passengers had gathered at the observation deck.
Looking up, the bridge seemed to almost touch the funnel, but in reality, there was about 2 meters of clearance.
Against the backdrop of the lights of Kobe, the bridge looked even more beautiful.
After enjoying the view for a while, I returned to my room and went to bed early.00:17, we passed the Seto Ohashi Bridge.
The orange streetlights illuminating the road on the bridge were beautiful.
The wind had picked up since we passed the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and it was now even stronger.
The cold wind had been blowing all throughout the journey.
The next bridge would be passed at around 02:50.
With time to spare, I went back inside to warm up and headed to the shower room. The shower room on the 7th floor was a private room.
The water-saving faucet automatically stops after a few seconds when you turn it.
After drying my hair with a dryer, I left the room.
Feeling refreshed after the shower, I bought a Mitsuya Cider (180 yen) from the vending machine.
I grabbed my laptop from my room and headed to the restaurant, which had already closed. The closed restaurant had part of the space opened up as a free area.
There was still about an hour until the next bridge crossing.
I decided to do some work on my laptop here.
The quiet space, with no one else around, was perfect for focusing.
I worked for a while, and when I glanced at the clock, it was 02:34.
The bridge should be coming up soon.
I checked the position monitor on board and headed to the observation deck.02:37, we passed the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge.
It wasn’t illuminated, but just like the previous bridges, the lights on the road stood out against the darkness.
The orange lights in a straight line were beautiful.
On the left side, the crescent moon created a picturesque scene.
The wind had calmed down a bit.
There were about 4 hours until breakfast.
I returned to my room and fell into a quiet sleep.06:36, the restaurant opened 4 minutes early.
There were fewer greasy dishes compared to dinner, but the variety was still abundant.
Simmered hijiki, kinpira, white fish, boiled sausages, and omelets.
Miso soup, curry, butter rolls, and toast were also available.
I picked up some dishes and took a seat.
The outside view had already brightened, so I enjoyed my meal while gazing out at the scenery.
Afterward, I returned to my room, brushed my teeth, and headed to the observation deck. When I stepped out onto the observation deck, a sparkling sea stretched out before me.
I couldn’t help but think, “It’s dazzling, but so beautiful.”
The morning sun rose, and the sea surface turned golden.
The ship’s wake extended all the way to the horizon, forming a light path illuminated by the sun.
I found myself lost in the view for a while.
Feeling refreshed, I returned to my room.15 minutes before disembarking, an announcement played.
“We will soon be arriving at Shinmoji Port, Kitakyushu.”
“Please double-check your belongings and prepare for disembarkation.”
As the announcement ended, passengers gathered at the entrance.
I also returned to my room, started gathering my things, and prepared to disembark.08:30, disembarkation began.
Upbeat music echoed throughout the ship.
Passengers flowed smoothly toward the disembarkation gate.
I followed the crowd and got off the ferry.
In front of the terminal, there was a free shuttle bus heading to JR Moji Station and JR Kokura Station.
Surprisingly, there were many passengers, and all the seats were filled.
At 08:43, once all passengers boarded, the bus departed for Kokura and Moji.09:26, we arrived in front of JR Kokura Station.
It took about 40 minutes by bus from Shinmoji Port.
It’s convenient that this trip is free of charge.
From Kokura Station to Hakata, it takes 16 minutes by Shinkansen or 1 hour 27 minutes by local rapid train.
Not only is it convenient, but it’s also affordable, offering great cost performance.
Previously, my main options for traveling between Osaka and Fukuoka were the Shinkansen or plane.
This style of travel has now become another option for me.Article on Sister Ship “Meimon Taiyo Ferry Fukuoka”
