Tanegashima Yakushima High-Speed Ferry Rocket 2 entrance

The ferry I took was the Rocket, a high-speed vessel.
The seating inside the ferry is divided into the 1st and 2nd floors.

When I made the reservation at the counter, I was asked, “Which floor would you prefer: 1st or 2nd?” So, I chose the 2nd-floor seats.
There is no system for reserved seats, so if there are empty seats on the day of departure, you can choose any available seat.

The Toppy & Rocket high-speed ferries (Jetfoils) have been operating on the Tanegashima-Yakushima route since 1989 under Kagoshima Shosen. From April 1, 2012, after merging with Cosmolines, the operation restarted as Tanegashima Yakushima High-Speed Ferry Co., Ltd.

The black etiquette bag with a handle is opaque, which helps hide the contents.

There is a life jacket under the seat, and in case of emergency, passengers are instructed to wear it and follow the staff’s guidance.
Only window-side seats have curtains for light blocking.

There are restrooms on both the 1st and 2nd floors. On the Rocket 2 ship I boarded, there were 3 restrooms on the 1st floor and 1 on the 2nd floor.

Boarding Experience & My Thoughts

Boarded the Tanegashima Yakushima High-Speed Ferry No. 111 “Rocket 2” from Nishinoomote Port on Tanegashima to Miyanoura Port on Yakushima. The ferry departed from Nishinoomote at 9:40 AM and arrived at Miyanoura at 10:34 AM.

The wind picked up one hour before departure, and the palm trees at Nishinoomote Port were swaying heavily.

Although I was worried about whether we could depart, the high-speed ferry successfully set off. Since the jetfoil travels above the water, it is less affected by waves, but once we ventured further out, the waves were rougher, and while the ship didn’t sway as dramatically as a typical ferry, there were continuous, smaller shakes.

Due to the sea conditions, we arrived at Miyanoura Port on Yakushima 2 minutes later than scheduled, at 10:32 AM. There was a long line of passengers waiting to board the return ferry to Kagoshima.

Since Yakushima attracts many tourists, passengers traveling from Kagoshima to Yakushima should try to arrive at the port early.

Pros & Cons

It takes half the time compared to the ferry

There is a bus stop at Nishinoomote Port, making it easy to access Nakadatsu Town and Minamitane Town by foot

For departures from Kagoshima, there is a bus service from Kagoshima Chuo Station, providing easy access

During the journey, it feels more like flying than sailing, so there is little worry of seasickness

The view from the second-floor seats is excellent

Compared to flying, it takes more time to travel

One-way fares between Kagoshima, Tanegashima, and Yakushima are at least 10,000 yen, which is expensive

The television on the window-side of the cabin cannot be seen due to backlight
